Gakar Rinpoche was born in the Himalayan region of Dolpo Nepal into the historic Hungtram family lineage. Six months after his birth, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche presided his haircut ceremony and prophesized that the boy would benefit sentient beings, and advised that he should be raised with extra care for the future of Dharma. At the request of the former Gakar Rinpoche’s students to find their Guru’s reincarnation, the supreme head of Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, His Holiness Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche gave a formal prediction letter to the search party. Soon after the boy was found, H.H. Trulshik Rinpoche recognised him as Gakar Rinpoche – the reincarnation of the Great Mahasiddha Virupa. Subsequently, he was enthroned in his predecessor’s main seat by H.H. Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche in 2011.

Gakar Rinpoche received his early stage education from his great-grandfather Hungtram Rinpoche as a small boy. He joined Shechen Monastery from the age of eight and has completed all the basic studies including grammar, poetry, science, languages, Buddhist metaphysics, and logic, etc. Under the guidance of H.H. Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, he had the privilege to continue his further Buddhist Studies with Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche and a group of selected reincarnated tulkus in Bhutan, and completed his higher Buddhist Studies at Shechen Institute of Advanced Buddhist Studies and Philosophical College in 2015.

Currently, Gakar Rinpoche teaches advanced Buddhist philosophies at Shechen Philosophical College as the senior lecturer (Lopon) and also serves as the chanting master (Uchung) at Shechen Monastery.
